Where does a CFO look for jobs these days?
Answers
Networking, networking, networking. Be as involved as possible in local/regional/national networking groups. Plan on having breakfast 1-2 days per week with people in those groups. You would be amazed at the opportunities that surface. Many you won't likely be interested in, but you may find some that peak your interest. You will also be able to match people networking through you for new roles as well. Best of luck.
Network at functions where hiring managers (i.e., CEO's) attend.
Go to industry functions as opposed to generic business type events, because you'll get more focused people. Exceptions are fund raisers.
Oh, don't ever stop - you never know when you are back in that situation again...
I was out of work two years ago and some of my best leads for a CFO position was through my kids' baseball and soccer teams. Every parent on the team sent me some type of lead. Second, health clubs. Lots of executives work out so it is an easy way to network. Third, get involved in charities. I'm on the board for a local charity and received a lot of help from fellow board members.
Recruiters represent about 10% of the available job market.
Networking - not playing the posted position game - is an effective strategy. Great leads often come through third parties who work with service companies.
Increased visibility is a necessity today. Most of my clients get their new opportunities directly through a complete and compelling profile on Linkedin that attracts recruiters.
