I could not agree more. The simple act of having a photo on your profile immediately connects you with the reader.

I have to say business attire. This is not a social network, it is a professional community. For a variety of reasons i can think of you would want to put your most professional foot forward. I just don't see a downside, whether it is professional acquaintances or recruiters finding you here, you can't go wrong. Just my $.02, I'll respect you either way :).

The branded photo helps the recruiter understand - almost immediately - that there's a better chance that you would fit into the company culture, and that gives you a huge leg up in the interview process.
Hi all - I am a bit late for this discussion, but I agree with Michael S and Cindy- the picture should be "professional" business attire - this is a business forum. When I first joined LinkedIn, I mentioned to some of my friends/contacts that I need to take a professional picture to post. They thought a professional photographer - I said "no, a professional looking picture, with suit etc. Since I am looking to use this website for networking etc, I want to look professional, not casual as if I am on vacation."
