You cannot really measure, and the payoff may be years away. Devote a limited and focused amount of time, generally not over 8 hours a week, and perhaps only 4. Also provide regular time for expertise development. Lastly provide personal time...avoid being a grind.
I think the quick and easy answer is that if you aren't getting stellar opportunities that are a great fit with your skill sets and which come with more money, then either a) you're wasting your time; or b) you're not well-branded.
