I need career advice from experts if I may. BACKGROUND: I came to USA as an MD and was not able to get into medical residency to pursue my career as an MD. I decided to go into the Healthcare Administration sector and ended up working as a Grants Financial Analyst in the healthcare setup. I have more than 7 years of experience now, in hospital setup. On my resume’ I have the following; Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP), Masters in Health Administration (MHA) and MBA (in progress). After working for the same organization since being in USA I have decided to move further and apply for Finance Manager and/or Finance Director jobs in the healthcare organizations. QUESTION/ADVISE NEEDED: I wanted to get input from those who have been reviewing and filtering the job applications and resumes’. My confusion is if you have to review my resume’ for a Finance Manager/Director in a healthcare job, would having a MD qualification included in the resume’ help me or harm me to get an interview.
MD designation on Healthcare Finance Manager Job Resume'/application
Answers
In which countries are you legally allowed to use the designation MD? Is your designation still current? Are you registered/certified as an MD in the state in which you reside?
There are often state laws that govern use of professional certifications (e.g. board certified doctor). Avoid violating those!!
You may be able to weave into your resume "...former MD (name of country, specialty)...." and your foreign country education that will likely provoke a discussion that you can use to emphasize your unique combo of skills.
In USA there are two steps to complete before you can practice as an MD. First, is to pass a set of three exams (USMLE exams) and second is to complete Residency training which takes usually three to four years to complete. In my situation I did pass the exams but was not able to get a spot in any Residency programs. In my case it is not ok to practice medicine but it is ok and legal for me to use MD designation with my name, even if I have not completed the training.
So, as I am actively searching for jobs in the Healthcare Finance setup with 8 years of experience in the field, I was wondering if you were to review my resume’, lets say for a Finance Manager/Director position in a hospital setting, would having a MD qualification included in the resume’ help me or harm me to get an interview?
