Hiring an HR expert

Would you hire an HR/talent expert who has excellent experience with a great track record, overwhelming references, a PHR but that only has an Associates degree instead of a Bachelors degree?

In a heart beat. I am 100% behind education and your prospect sounds like they have what you need, i.e. a PHR. I have a good friend that has a BA. He is a trader. When I was going back for my MBA I asked if he was also going to get an advanced degree. He responded, "for what, I do I don't need one." He was right. The real question to ask yourself, what did this individual not learn within the two year degree that they would have learned with a four year degree, that they are missing for your position?

Absolutely. If the only reason the person is not fitting the job requisition is the lack of a BA/BS vs an Associates, I would re-evaluate your job requirement criteria. There is a period of time after college when what degree you obtained matters much less than what you have accomplished in your work career. It sounds like you have a solid candidate.

I generally concur with comments as I have hired effective individuals with similar credentials. I would add though for those of us with a 4 yr and/or graduate degree know how it has made an impact on our lives and careers; as long as there are realistic expectations with the candidate in terms of short-term and longer-term career growth, the education should not be a deal breaker.
