If not actually on your company's list, what should be on a checklist and part of the process?
What's On Your Employee Onboarding Checklist?
Answers
Toss out the "checklist" mentality and make it an "EXPERIENCE" mentality/process. The checklist mentality often results in the "Here's your ID (check), here's your handbook (check), sign here (check), sign there (check), he/she is your boss (check)...off you go!" process. The experience mentality/process tends to stick with the employees better and has more relevance to imbibe the company culture.
Crafting an experience that goes through "a list" is so much better than just a checklist. As with most of my comments, it is all a matter of perspective or point of view which changes the dynamics.
With all due respect, Emerson, I don't think Susan has evidenced any particular "mentality." I think she's just asking what should be part of the process/list.
Susan, I don't have much to do with onboarding or I would actually answer your question.
Anybody else?
David,
I was NOT referring to Susan having the mentality but onboarding as a whole. If my wording made you think otherwise, I apologize.
As you have again pointed out....."...just asking what should be part of the process/list.", I think a better question would be...."what should be part of the experience". (How to WOW your new hires!) An "experience" is also employee centric while a checklist is employer centric. It is one thing telling an employee that the company has this set of culture (check) but it is another for them to experience how it is done (albeit on a smaller, sneak preview kind of thing).
Here is a sample of what I mean (a bit extreme and not for everyone but the concept is there) ... https://business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog/2015/07/extreme-onboarding-how-to-wow-your-new-hires-rather-than-numb-them
Like I said, it is not a "checklist" but an experience...an employee centric one.

Sarah, thanks so much for the lovely compliment. I'm the one who wrote it. I agree with the premise the checklist is not enough - we are talking about people and their needs to feel comfortable, to gain understanding of what's expected of them, to learn the company culture - and to find out who to go to and where to go to find things....
