I agree with Ernie 100%! You need to find what works for YOU and what you enjoy and meets your needs. That being said I think that top notch Job Competency requires an effort and focus for all finance professionals. You can't do enough in this area, the technical requirements of our roles change quickly and we must be current. You can’t do enough reading or networking. There is so much literature and great resources to help you stay current. Prioritize areas you need to work on and find ways to get the education/networking. There are free sources - like Proformative.com, free webinars, etc and paid sources such as reading the Journal of Accountancy, CFO Magazine and other journals every month. When speakers come to your town, often through your partners such as auditors, accounting firms, bankers and legal relationships, be sure you are sending your team and yourself and always continuously improving yourself through education and experiences. Attend conferences or courses that are focused on areas you need more education on - such as Risk Management, Financials Analysis, FP & A or others. I have been a member of AICPA for years and think it is a wonderful organization and I have gained immense knowledge through them as well. My State CPA chapter has also been a source of information.
