Can LinkedIn Help Us Make Resumes Extinct?

Every so often I read articles on LinkedIn that inspire me to rant a bit and inspire conversation. I will admit up front that I have a strong opinion regarding resumes, I hate them.  They are hard to craft, out dated in today's world, and so few people know how to write a great one (me included), I do not see the point.

I will also admit that I am huge fan of LinkedIn on many levels. I believe my LinkedIn profile offers a very robust overview of my professional value that can't be replicated in the format of a resume.

A complaint I have for LinkedIn: Why can't we download our profiles into a PDF document to e-mail employers, HR professionals and recruiters who do not use LinkedIn as a primary screening tool? Your answer is that it would change the user agreement, so what?

LinkedIn; I plead with you, please help me make the resume obsolete and put it on the path to extinction where it belongs.

Anyone other LinkedIn users feel the same way?

I hear you! However, the details (or absence of it) for most LinkedIn users is still different from their resume. If not absent of details, it is mostly "what you do" and not what have you accomplished in the job which a resume would normally contain.

I guess it will still evolve. I do however agree that if given the chance, the LinkedIn profile can and should replace the resume.

One added benefit is the added information in the profile. Recommendations, LinkedIn Group membership, to some extent, who are your "connections".

BTW....you CAN "save" your profile to PDF.

I found it, if you click on your profile under "View As" there is an option there. Thank you LinkedIn!

It does translate well as a PDF, but it is a start and contains almost all the information. It does not include all your post or your profile photo.
