I get a lot of unsolicited contacts from external recruiters. Is there any way I can use them to my advantage?

They should be part of your network. They will be a source when you need to hire, and a resource when you are looking. Recruiters tend to be highly networked as well, so you can look to them for introductions.
Ask them to connect with you via Linked-in. You will then be able to engage when they post a position you need or can refer a friend. I have a bunch of Recruiters in my Network. When they post I see it. Goodluck.
Yes, since you are a hiring decision maker ask them for introductions to other organizations around town. They look for ways to leverage their attractiveness to you for future businesses. Connect on linkedin, then search through their connections and add the
This is how recruiters operate, they build large lists on linkedin to ensure they are a minimum of 2 degrees from all executives. There is an agenda.
You don't need a recruiter to find a job, that is a myth.
Today with so many unemployed companies are not using external recruiters and the reason you are being contacted is that employers are only willing to pay a placement fee for those candidates that are currently employed.
Only the passive candidates are being recruited. So they must see your background as very valuable.
Ask them what the going salary is for your current position in the client they are working on. An easy way to research the market rate for your skill set and establish a benchmark for asking for a raise. Tell your boss you are being head hunted, if you are someone they don't want to lose they will throw some fast money your direction.

There may be recruiters out there that `build large lists on linkedin` because they have an 'agenda'.
Great recruiters build relationships and care about the people they network with.
Find great recruiters. You'll be glad you did.

Regis offers great advice. Recruiters are your best allies when you do NOT need / want a job.
First establish that they really are quality recruiters, and then build good will with them by referring quality candidates to them for positions that are not a good fit for you.
Carter,
When you say 'use them to my advantage', what do you mean?
(Finance people [in general] hate to be sold to. So when someone approaches them to sell them something, finance people get uncomfortable. Sounds like you're uncomfortable. Why?)
The company you work for sells something and gets paid for it. Because sales people at your business sell to other, you get paid.
Good sales people provide a product or service to someone that wants it, needs it, or doesn't know they want or need it yet.

Developing relationships with great recruiters will help you and your company hire great people when you need them most.
Great CFOs don`t scour LinkedIn or post jobs for great talent to build their team. They are too busy focusing on doing what they do best. Great CFOs work with great recruiters.
